Will the literate Asia please stand up?

Asia is the world’s largest continent and has more than half of the planet’s population living there. Despite this, the literacy rate in the Asian continent is poor against other continents like Europe, Americas and Australasia. One of the reasons why Asia has always struggled with literacy is because it houses some of the largest and populous countries in the world. The above average population with limited resources push people into going out to make a living at a very early stage in their lives. Of course, then there are post illiteracy issues in the societies like sanitation to culture and other subjects that are delicate to be touched. Well, that is one part of Asia.

There are countries in Asia are have extreme wealth and have thriving literacy rates. However, that being said, the gap between the well-being and not so well-being is too large in Asia. This is same for continent, countries and communities. While some Asians cannot find one square meal a day, there are some who have a pool in the backyard and eat a delicious meal made with some quality cast iron cookware. International pressure and realization about the potential that Asia has, many companies and countries are now investing in education here. With small schools run by local companies to well known business schools off shore campus, the trend and demand for education is growing. A literate Asia is not just good for itself but also for the entire world.

United Nations and other non government organizations around the world now donate time, effort and money to build modern day schools in remote areas in many countries. Eliminating illiteracy is an important part of creating a better, beautiful and peaceful world. Someday, everyone’s efforts will pay off in large dividends and Asia will then be called Literasia.

The Ongoing War on Illiteracy

Illiteracy continues to be inherited from one generation to the next and from all different parts of the world. This occurrence has a big impact on the growth of modern slavery.  None of the countries today are completely free from illiteracy but the current education system we have in place today is successfully winning more and more battles. Even basic education gives an increased chance for a better future as it empowers individuals to take full control over their own lives.  The biggest problem with illiteracy we can indicate in countries with low economical development or unstable political situation, is that it is becoming more and more normal for children to work the fields and mines as opposed to attending class. Hard labor work in such a young age causes not only physical destruction but deprives them the opportunity to fully understand the mechanics of life that is given through education. This gives a compounding effect as the years go by, as they, so used to receiving minimal pay, simply are not aware of the ever changing economic tides.

Fighting against literacy is a must in the XXI century. It is the only chance for millions of people to get out of poverty. Providing education for the lowest common denominator will most likely bring benefits that ripple throughout society as productivity rises. Education always creates positive change. People are becoming more conscious about their lives and thus less likely that they will become victims. They will start to be more aware of the situation that they have to deal with and begin to search for new solutions and new opportunities. It is easy to sell gold once we own them but it is hard to come up with ideas when so many people are lacking the fundamental tools needed to change their own lives. Fighting against illiteracy is a must in order to change the world for the better.

Business Strategy: The Importance of Being Literate

In different countries around the world, many organizations promote literacy through a number of methods. Anti-illiteracy campaigns can also be used as a business strategy, as elucidated in this article. Did you know that the average American is said to be able to read like a 7th or 8th grader? Modern China poses the same problems. Since the 1950s, literacy movements have been instituted by the government to uplift individual knowledge and productivity. One of the perils in social education is the vastness of the population and the basic lack of teachers compared to the number of students. For these reasons, associations and commissions on anti-illiteracy have been established in China.

Why are anti-literacy campaigns important? Anti-illiteracy campaigns allow a nation to become mobilized and advance from primitive conditions. It is also a form of business strategy development to uplift an otherwise economically devastated country. Anti-illiteracy campaign strategies are basically four-fold. Development of the literacy campaign in Cuba in 1961 generated the following strategy: the first is to identify the illiterate population. In China, it was recognized that the main problem was demographical, and not ideological. Who is the target of your anti-illiteracy campaign? Some of these projects narrow down to a specific audience, such as literacy campaigns for women in Somalia. Second and third respectively is to recruit the literacy workers and to train them. What tools and approaches do you need to create this project? How are you going to deploy your teachers? Lastly, it is to organize and implement the campaign.

There are different ways to organize an anti-illiteracy campaign. The Experimental World Literacy Program, on an experimental note, did not cling to one single strategy for such a big effort project. There has never before been any international effort to demolish illiteracy such as the EWLP. However, it abided by five main components for a successful literacy program. These are intensity, functionality, selectivity, innovativeness and experimentation. The main function of a literacy program is to enable people to fulfill social, civic and economic roles. This is the meaning of functionality, where people are taught to include them in civil society, and increase their productivity. Part of innovation and experimentation involves training programs, which can afford to be less rigid. Teachers need initial training followed by refresher courses, where they can integrate personal classroom experiences to share with fellow teachers.

Business strategies on anti-illiteracy campaigns bring about only positive outcomes despite the massiveness and trickiness of this kind of project. The value of a literacy program can never be underestimated. It affects people in countless ways and contributes to the betterment of society in general.

Reduce financial illiteracy in order to reduce personal debts of the ordinary citizen

Financial illiteracy is one of the factors that really affect many people when it comes to managing resources like money. For instance, if you had a personal debt like a car loan, you would be defining the prospects of financial illiteracy by spending rather more time funding debt based consumption needs rather than focusing on debt related investments. Taking on a car loan is a serious decision that should not be taken light heartedly as you should take care of yourself and always read the fine prints to reduce the chance of buying a car with a car loan that is not favourable to your personal situation. The benefit of carefully reading the fine prints of the car loan contract is that you will reduce the risk of losing the car when you are not able to pay your monthly payments.

There are many types of consumer or personal debts. Some of these debts are charged at higher interest rates compared to long-term secured loans. On that note, we can substantiate that a personal debt like a car loan is a type of unsecured loan that results to the borrower incurring higher interest rates compared to those interest rates that would be incurred in secured loans. In The Netherlands the largest financial institutions that deal with car loans (autolening or geld lenen voor auto in Dutch) are banks (ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank, etc) on one side and lease companies (Hertz, Athlon, Leaseplan) on the other side.

Due to the current economic climate, competitive and increasing pressure from the lender among other financial pressures, ordinary citizens are finding it difficult to cope with the increased in personal debt problems as they lack financial literacy. By reducing financial illiteracy, the expenditure that would be incurred on the account of applying for a car loan would be greatly reduced. So does the concept work? The answer is yes, if you reduce financial illiteracy, you stand a better chance of reducing those personal debts of the ordinary citizen which will culminate to a stabilized economy.

If we explain the above point on a broader perspective, financial education or literacy is supposed to teach people how to manage money wisely. The concept is to enlighten people on the importance of making objective decisions as well as creating awareness on financial matters, how to go about them and solutions if you happen to fall into a ditch of financial constrain. In third world countries, the poor are the most affected, if financial education was extended to these people, they would have a general idea on how to manage the least funds they get a hold of.

Mostly, in situations where financial illiteracy is a liability, significant segments of potential markets tend to remain unaddressed. Additionally, not all life cycle would be addressed in relation to accessed loans. When an individual without financial literacy, personal debts remain stabling blocks as they tend to address matters that may not predominantly improve life situations but only make them pleasant. A good example is where one gets a loan to purchase an asset that he or she doesn’t really need. Calculating your ability to payback what you owe before you even borrow is essential.

Trends in Detroit Illiteracy

I think most people assume that between your parents and your in-school education, you learn to read at a fairly early age. But many studies have been showing recently that literacy in America is actually down in percentages. For example, in a 2011 survey from the National Institute for Literacy, Detroit was found to have about 47 percent of adults who were functionally illiterate.

This means that while these adults can do many of the normal functions, they have trouble with their reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills. These kinds of statistics can nearly give someone whiplash in confusion. How can this be right?

These assumptions come due to the idea that we can spot an illiterate person by their inability to make it in the ?real world.? But another study based out of Detroit also found that half of those who are illiterate have a high school diploma or G.E.D. I think there should be more emphasis on addressing this problem in schools (public and private) by investing in more reading programs so that adults will be able to have the skills necessary to finding information in a text and integrating these pieces.

Literacy: The Ultimate Key to Succeed In Life

Getting employed nowadays is really very challenging. As our world continues to increase its human population, the competition in all fields gets tougher in the sense that most aspirants try to excel in their chosen endeavor. This is the reason why people should realize the great importance of literacy and good education in our existence.

We have to face reality that almost everyday in our daily activities, communication plays a big role. So, it is really vital for everyone to be able to read and write efficiently in order to relay any message effectively in the long run.

Literacy is routed from our pre-school days. As early as possible, responsible parents/guardians should teach the value of literacy by exposing kids to different kinds of books appropriate to their growing stage. To encourage children to read even at a very young age is a tough task at first, introduce them to colorful books with attractive pictures and numbers. Let them become familiar with various shapes, colors and symbols. Make them feel secured and inspired when helping them read their favorite books. Share your ideas with your children and give them the chance to explore the beauty of reading.

With continued support to your children’s literacy needs, this eagerness of reading can be carried through their teens and later to their adult lives. Their love for books grew fonder as they improve their reading skills and gain the needed confidence. Without you knowing, you are already preparing your child for his/her future, either as a doctor, teacher or even a health worker as a certified ultrasound technician, although this may not be too apparent for now, but later in life this will entirely affect with the way he/she succeeds in his/her chosen profession. For sure they will thank you for doing them a big favor and that is imparting knowledge.

It’s never too late to learn, encourage kids to read different kinds of books, listen to educational songs, videos, DVDs, answer puzzles and even play games for all these experiences can add to their learning progress. The ultimate key to succeed in life relies to the solid foundation of the literacy formed in early childhood days. Be part of your child’s total transformation into a strong and goal-oriented individual of the future.

Take each learning process as memorable as it can be and teach children to keep striving for more in whatever circumstances they have to face in life.

Reduce illiteracy through education and social media marketing

Sometimes you may be averse to getting an Internet marketing company because they believe that these companies manipulate the online needs of customers. That is not what I think about modern commerce, where there are plenty of customers thriving online (In fact some of them may even do all their buying online). So for me getting an online marketing company to help businesses promote is just plain common sense. Since there are plenty of other businesses that can compete with mine on the Web, why not give myself an edge which can yield me plenty of profits? It is within my full power to legitimately promote something by marketing online, and as I choose, I can outsource the marketing to an seo agency.

The problem with Internet marketing, however, is that many others do not differentiate genuine goods from scam – they just promote anything and anything they could to get profits. That, however, just intensifies my need to market. I am no scammer, and I do not want to be overtaken by scammers, who are all market and no substance, then I should get an online marketing company that knows the sophisticated instruments to get customers’ attention into the genuine goods I sell.

Those who do not feel like marketing in the Internet often have the justification that it is substance which matters, not the image. However, being an Internet user, I know that before I can get any customers, I have to entice them, attract them, and fascinate them. And that can’t be done by substance alone. I myself only have a small amount of time dealing with every individual website. So that’s what I would expect of customers as well.

Many times I am justified in not marketing myself because I have other things to do; the answer to that is outsourcing to an online marketing company.

Further Evidence Of Falling Literacy Standards

It is difficult to pinpoint when literacy standards in the UK started to fall. It was probably when the government at the time changed the way children learnt to spell. But fall standards certainly have, and I would suggest that the popularity of texting will not help raise standards in the future. Texting of course involves using abbreviations for many words, and there is a general absence of capital letters and punctuation.

In our personalised christening gifts business we receive orders from customers with personal messages that we are required to add mainly to commemorative plates. When, as often happens, the customer’s grammar is incorrect we are faced with a dilemma: do we correct the grammar or use the wording as supplied by the customer? If the plate is to commemorate the christening of a child in the customer’s immediate family, the error will probably not be noticed; but if the plate is a christening gift for someone not in the customer’s immediate family, there is more of a chance the bad grammar will be noticed – and the bad grammar could be blamed on us! On balance we correct the bad spelling and add punctuation where it is needed, to be blamed for someone else’s low standard of literacy is hardly fair.

Ill-Literacy and Wine Consumption

We all know the stereotype of the man sitting on the corner, a  bottle of wine (not from a wine of the month club to be sure) stored in a paper bag, swigging it instead of using a glass.

Literacy doesn’t stop you from ever ending up like that, but it is the simplest step that you can take in that regard.  Literacy helps you to graduate high school and to do well enough in that regard to go to college.  Going to college helps you to gain a job which can support you and your family over the long term.  Isn’t that what we all really want?

Jimi Hendrix – The Boy Who Played a Broomstick

If you look at a Jimi Hendrix poster you see one of the biggest rock stars of the nineteen sixties and a man still thought of as one of the best guitarists ever, even over forty years after his death. What most people do not know about the legend is just how humble his beginnings were.

Johnny Hendrix – Jimi’s real name – was born in Seattle, Washington – in 1942 and had a childhood that was less than perfect. His father was away fighting in World War II and his mother had very little time for him and he rarely had a steady place to live, shuffled from relative to relative.

The one thing he did have was a broomstick that he pretended was a guitar. It was not until he was 15 that he actually got his first real guitar, which he taught himself to play by watching others. Given all his later success, who would have thought that it was a kitchen utensil that got Jimi Hendrix’ career started!

Conservatives Oppose Healthier Foods in School Cafeterias

Big surprise, conservatives once again fight pretty much anything that liberals suggest, it seems to not matter anymore, the right & the left have a single agenda which is to oppose the other side. The governmental push to have healthier foods in school cafeterias was met with rejection and imaginary panic that trying to make the kids healthier is another intervention on personal freedoms. So long story short what they are saying basically is that they would rather have their kids eat French fries and other greasy food, be overweight and suffering from many diseases when they grow up, than have them eat some vegetables during the lunch. One thing is to oppose taxation on certain foods that cause health risks, another thing is to oppose what school cafeteria is offering which is financed by tax dollars. It seemed like a perfectly fine idea to provide healthier lunch for the children and less high cholesterol foods to the young generation (High Cholesterol Foods), it’s a win-win situation for everybody, however, conservatives and some of the Republicans that are now leaning toward conservatives to win more votes are opposing such changes with some ridiculous explanations that are difficult to understand for a reasonable human being.

“Improving dietary guidelines at school is estimated to impact about 32 million kids that participate in the National School Lunch Program & about 12 million of kids in the School Breakfast Program”

Either way the program seems to going to take place anyways and many schools are happy to participate. The program will include providing healthier food to children and engaging them in physical activities. There will be also educational guidelines teaching the children of importance associated with healthy diet and healthy lifestyle choices and Michelle Obama seems to be pushing this agenda pretty enthusiastically (First Lady Michelle Obama Recognizes the HealthierUS School Challenge Participants). We can only hope that crazy conservative opposition will fade down as the time goes by and as a result we will have healthier children and our children will have healthier future. White House numbers say that a good number of children have half of their calorie intake at school. Improving dietary guidelines at school is estimated to impact about 32 million kids that participate in the National School Lunch Program & about 12 million of kids in the School Breakfast Program; I think we can all agree that’s a significant number and it should make some worthwhile improvements in the lives of the children involved.

Illiteracy and Cordyceps Sinensis

Cordyceps is a popular Chinese traditional cure that consists of dried fungus called Cordyceps Sinensis, which can be found on the larva of the caterpillar. In most cases it is used to replenish general body health. On the other hand, illiteracy is the inability to read and write, either because of lack of education or because of learning difficulties or other intellectual impairment such as deranged mind. As Cordyceps may appear to be safe, they could cause some side effects.

IllitracyCordyceps is economical valuable and has been in the centre of usage in many countries unlike illiteracy whereby everyone is condemning it by all means. However, it is virtually impossible to imagine what it is like to be illiterate, and how terrifying and incomprehensible the world must seem. However, with nationwide Cordyceps Sinensis campaigns reigning everywhere, things are looking up in health sector, as even the illiterate are being made aware of its numerous benefits.

Illiteracy on society works as inhibitor. That is, the more illiterate people there are in a country, the harder it will be for the country to progress. On the contrary, Cordyceps is more likely to generate useful and appealing results in the health sector since it has been accepted worldwide and many manufacturers are trying to improve on it user credibility. On the other hand, illiteracy leads to lack of hygienic knowledge culminating to diseases in the society.

Illiteracy has been a major drawback regarding distribution of Cordyceps since it is seen a strong drug. However, it is a curative medicine for cancer, female infertility, blood sugar among others. It is also a prevention medicine but due to lack of knowledge structures and strong measures are imposed on its use. Some people tend to think of the fungi as some sort of a disgusting thing inedible and ugly, but do not look so when in tablet or capsule.
Nevertheless, sensitization campaigns to instill knowledge should be carried out to enlighten those who have no trust in Cordyceps to become attracted to them.

Why Is The Left Not Giving Consumers Debt Relief

Our government has really not tried to help people stuck in debt one bit.  To them it is more important to bail our insolvent banks and countries than to worry about the financial burdens they have in fact helped to put people into in the first place.  It is quite disgusting if you ask me, in fact the FTC has gone ahead and pretty much single handedly destroyed the debt settlement industry.

Debt settlement has proven to be one of the only programs that can help people avoid bankruptcy and still get out of debt during such harsh financial times.  Hopefully the administration will put some kind of bill together to help bail the American public out for once, but that of course would imply they stop accepting “donations” from the lobbyists of the credit card industry for their campaigns.  Now who honestly believes that will ever happen?

Illiterate People May Just Need More Sleep

Literacy is a skill that has to be nurtured by a fully functioning mind; it often involves great amounts of reading to fully become a literate person.   However one major contributor to your mind not operating at its full capacity is a lack of sleep.  The mind needs solid quality rest to work right.  Currently there are millions of people suffering from a condition known as sleep apena.  This condition often causes the victim to breathe improperly throughout the night; the result is loud snoring (also keeping your partner from good sleep) and getting horrible sleep.

The good news is that there are many sleep apnea treatment options available to people who are seriously looking for help.  One of the more popular methods in which to treat this condition is through oral appliance therapy, which can be offered by dentists who are trained in dental sleep medicine.

As Easy as A, B, C

There are things in life that many of us take for granted. I’m writing this article and you’re reading it. This might not seem like a big deal to us, but not everyone has grown up with the opportunities we had. Columbia University report that:

about one in 10 Americans, have below-basic English skills

In this day and age, is that right? I remember my parents teaching me to read and practicing sounding out words as I read them. One that it took me a while to work out was sto mach. What’s that I thought? I was sounding it out but it didn’t really sound like stomach.

That’s another area where we don’t all have the education that we need. I’m talking about the foods that we put into our stomach each and every day. Not all food is created equal. That’s why we have such low health literacy rates. Weight problems and diabetes are the health equivalent of not being able to read.

It’s no wonder that poor communities suffer disproportionately when it comes to literacy rates and ill health. Education is required to overcome both problems. Learning to read and learning about our own health empower us and give us better chances to succeed in life. As many of us are able to read, don’t we owe it to ourselves to learn more about health and well being? If you can already read, take a look at these juicer reviews to find out just how easy it is to improve your own health.

Literacy Should Start At Home

With the economy in the tank and more and more people everyday going online typing into Google things like “I need money” and “I need a job”, it really puts the spotlight on what a deep hole we are in. Our education system and it’s failures are not helping the situation either. Kids today graduate from high school ill equipped to do well in the working world and it makes one wonder what are they teaching in schools these days? While our public educators get increased tax dollars every year, it seems we keep falling further behind other countries when it comes to educating our young.

Right now it is incredible how poor our students are doing in basic things like reading and writing and if our schools can’t teach it then parents should. Ultimately I believe, the responsibility falls on parents. The problem is though that more and more families have both parents working and that leaves little time to spend with the kids.

Rapidly advancing technology isn’t helping either. With texting so popular with teenagers, they are learning and using thousands of made up abbreviations daily in their lives rather than real words. These abbreviations have replaced real sentences and we are now raising a generation of kids who actually say and write “OMG” rather than spell it out. This can’t be good for our culture and it can’t be good for their prospects of getting jobs. We need to somehow get back to teaching solid reading, writing, arithmetic, and science so that our younger generation can prosper out in the real world like the generations before it.

No one should care more about the future of a child than the parents of that child. When I was in the first grade, I had trouble learning the multiplication table. This prompted my mother to teach it to me herself and go above and beyond what my school would do so that I didn’t fall behind. If more parents today did the same thing with their kids who are in trouble, we would solve the illiteracy problem we have in the country and our children would be better equipped to make a full life for themselves after graduating.

Fostering Literacy While Living in an RV

Many parents in modern America have serious concerns about the ability of the public schooling system to provide functional levels of mathematic skills and literacy for children.  Educational achievement is of increasing important in todays globalized economy, as the kids of today will be competing with well-educated people from around the world for the jobs of tomorrow.

These concerns about public schooling prompt many parents to seek alternative means to school their children.  While supplemental tutoring is one popular option, some families decide to skip public schools all together and homeschool their kids instead.

This option raises all sorts of interesting prospects for families.  When a family is not tied to a school system for their educational needs, there are many possibilities they can pursue.  There is a growing subset of families who adopt a fulltime RV living lifestyle, and take the kids with them.

This nomadic living can have great benefits to children.  Now to be clear, I’m not talking about people who are forced to live in RVs due to economic constraints, but those who choose to do so.  When people live in an RV, they can travel the country – and even the world – and visit sites of great cultural or historic interest.

Any kid will learn much more about the Civil War by spending a week at Gettysburg than they would in a couple of dry classes on the subject in 10th grade.  Likewise, learning about Ancient Greece would be much more engaging when visiting a museum in Washington DC rather than watching a slide show in class.

While some people have concerns about the ability of homeschooling to turn children into highly literate, skilled and educated citizens, when done right – such as by an engaged family exploring the world in an RV – there is no reason it should not.  Given the lack of success many public schools have in achieving that goal, alternatives such as this are certainly worthy of consideration.

Business Sector Want Improved Literacy

When we think of literacy problems we tend to think of the lack of education in developing countries.  There are of course some nations of the world where there are huge levels of people without even basic literacy.  However there are issues in even the most developed countries particularly with the fact that jobs and vacancies are increasingly looking for higher levels of education

A typical example is highlighted from a report produced by the Scottish Chamber of Commerce earlier this year.  Although there are high levels of employment throughout Europe currently, many employers are still struggling to find suitable candidates to fill skilled roles.  Job vacancies are sitting unfilled because there are simply insufficient candidates with the right skills to fill them.

The Skills survery recorded over 50% of firms in Scotland were suffering this problem despite many attempts at finding the right candidates.  Eighty percent of the firms who were polled in the survey called for an urgent need to improve basic literacy and numeracy skills amongst youngsters.  In some cases the probelms have meant that firms are undertaking basic skills training themselves.

This highlights the ever growing gap between education and the workplace.  Young people are being left stranded with insufficient skills to enter the workplace successfully.  Other areas that are seen as problems include motivation, attitudes and interpersonal skills which are often very deficient in many young people.

There has long been a certain disconnect between school and work but one of the biggest areas is that of IT training.  It is arguably one of the more important skils areas outside of basic literacy and numeracy, however the curriculum in most UK areas is simply inadequate.  Most teachers in this area have been transferred from other areas, very few have the skills in advanced areas of Information technology.  Typically the curriculum will cover areas like word processing, spreadsheets and simple application programs.  This fails to give youngsters a grounding in more specific technology areas like computer programming, network development and analysis skills which are hugely in demand.  Very few youngsters are taught technology to a very high level in UK schools. You won’t find many who know how to construct a simple network, set up a proxy or understand how a computer actually works.

Literacy, Eating Right, And Exercise

There is no doubt about it: we have a growing problem in this country in regards to childhood obesity and literacy.  Here is the problem: many kids don’t eat right.  They go to school in the morning having eaten junk food or nothing at all. The foods kids eat have a huge impact on their ability to learn.

When they eat a sugary breakfast or skip breakfast altogether, they can’t focus. The same goes for children who are sedentary.  Kids who don’t get up and move around more often have a more difficult time learning.  This often means that kids stunt their literacy by not eating right and skipping out on exercise to eat junk food and watch television and play video games instead.  It isn’t just a problem of kids today, either.

Kids learn unhealthy habits from their parents.  When parents spend too much time sitting around and eating junk food, so do their kids.  The solution is to teach by example.  Parents should ditch the television for a good book, teaching literacy by example.  Parents should also ditch the bad eating habits for healthier food options, and start an exercise routine.  When parents get into shape, kids want to do the same!

Check into some of today’s most effective workouts for something that will get you looking and feeling good fast.  P90X reviews show that people can get excellent results in a short amount of time.  Help kids turn their lives around quickly as well, by encouraging them to read, eat right, and exercise.  The results will be healthier children with better habits and far better report cards!  It is so amazing how just a good breakfast and regular exercise can contribute to kids who are more focused and better students overall.

Into Battle

Some people liken the fight against illiteracy as a war and with the right backing it is a war that can be won. It is not just a case of teaching people to read and write but of educating them on the benefits and how in the long run it will help them.

Certain developing countries have a greater problem than others with children being taken out of school at an early age to work. this is by no means a cruelness from the parents but more often than not a necesity as poverty is the biggest killer. By being able to help these families and allow the children the chance to learn the skills that will set them up for their lives we are creating more hope for the future.

It may not be the same as riding a noble steed into battle but I find using a motorcycle as being the best way to get about. Of course the roads and road users vary in quality from country to country so making sure I have the best equipment available is essential, I usually look about online and check blogs to find the top items before going to one of my favoured sites, click here for an example.

How to Improve Illiteracy with the Power of Greenhouses

Language is extremely important. However, many tend to overlook that just as spoken language is a necessary skill, so is written language. Having poor, or no, written language skills can make a child’s future very difficult. If you want to ensure that your child has everything that they need to succeed, then it is time you started gardening. That is right; gardening. Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between gardening and thinking. Most people spend the time they have in their garden pondering over the things that elude them throughout the day. So a greenhouse could very well be the investment that helps your child become a success in the future.

Learning to Read Through Planting

Many times, children do not learn to read simply because they believe the information that they are receiving is useless. And while no information is useless, and all has its purpose, learning something that helps you achieve a goal can make your kid a more avid reader. Start off easy; simply helping them to read the planting directions for a plant can pique their interest somewhat. Seeing that after they read, they were able to achieve something as a result will give them the confidence that they need in order to keep trying, and work at their literacy skills.

How You Can Help

While learning to garden, and read, your child is going to need support. The great thing about greenhouses is that you will be able to make your garden a year round stable, giving them the stability that they desire. But they are also going to need your help. At times, gardening can be very difficult. Even with enough sunlight, and water, plants die. This can be very discouraging to young children, and as such, it is important that you show them simply because something wrong happened, it does not mean that they should give up. This is yet another trait that greenhouse gardening can help teach your child that will help them when it comes to improving their literacy, as it will show them that all things worth doing are worth the effort, and that some things simply take more tries than others. The best part is that you will also be there with them, watching them learn to improve their literacy each and every day.

How to Cover the Web Design Pricing Costs of Eradicating Illiteracy

If you have established a charitable institution that helps in the fight against illiteracy, the best way of spreading the message and obtaining the support of others is by setting up a website for your organization. You should enlist a professional web designer so that your website visitors can access the right information, and also so that you don’t come across as an amateurish scam website. By coming across as a serious organization, you can offset the web design pricing cost of your site.

How a Website Can Help

The fight against illiteracy isn’t just about the specific educational programs you are offering but also about how you can spread the message to a greater number of people. The reach of a website is undeniable, but you need a professional web designer to make it truly optimized so that it can be found by more people more easily through search engines.

Your website can feature all the activities you have lined up. The information can show the schedules for each activity, and explain also how each one can help fight illiteracy.

Funding Your Campaign against Illiteracy

Everything costs money—even charitable causes—but you can also use your website to receive donations from sympathetic individuals and business institutions. You can have your web designer process the donations in much the same manner as commercial sites process payments. Donors can use their credit cards so that they can give specific amounts to the cause, and they can also provide their contact information so that they can receive newsletters and emails so that they can be informed about your organization’s current activities.

However, the help your organization can accept isn’t limited to just money. You can also accept donations such as goods and services. Make sure that your site can offer all the necessary information so that charitable people who wish to help will know exactly what they need to do. All these charitable donations can make your investments in the web design pricing worth every penny.

Preventing Illiteracy earlier

The ability to read is highly valued and important for social and economic advancement. Of course, most children learn to read fairly well and that should be thought earlier. There so many ways to ask children common with reading, talking, singing, playing sound and word games, reading, writing and drawing with your child are great ways to establish a good literacy foundation.

Everyday activities, like going to the local shops or library, surfing internet to get automatic dog feeder for large dogs as well as special treats – trips to the museum or zoo – all provide lots of opportunities for literacy development. Reading is essential to success in our society. Current difficulties in reading largely originate from rising demands for literacy, not from declining absolute levels of literacy. In a technological society, the demands for higher literacy are ever increasing, creating more grievous consequences for those who fall short.

Cyber Illiteracy in Canada a Problem

Canadians are amongst the heaviest users of the web in the world.  But although they spend a lot of their lives online, Canadians are surprisingly lacking in basic digital literacy skills.   This is deemed to be a problem by the Privacy Commission Department headed by Jennifer Stoddart.

In fact this was the subject of a recent speech she gave to a canadian Business forum last week.  It was stated that the average Canadian spends more than 40 hours a month online, pushing them right up the internet usage world table.  However they have been found to be on the whole surprisingly unaware of the dangers of the web to their computers, information and privacy.

They were found to rarely read privacy policies, have little knowledge about cookies and privacy issues.  Some Canadian users have access to specific security tools but normally only use a proxy to watch Hulu for example.  There have also been a much larger percentage of Canadians who have been taken in by online scams and fraudsters than other countries.

Stoddart is unusual as she is one of the outspoken critics of the proposed Government Internet Surveillance bill.  This would have forced Internet businesses and ISPs to divulge personal information to Government departments and law enforcement agencies.  The bill was actually shelved bby the Justice Minister earlier in the year.  Stoddart claimed that it would have goven the authorities too much access to personal information.

There was a general agreement within businesses present that they have a duty to ensure people are aware of privacy issues whilst using their websites.  It also made good business sense to ensure that customers are aware of security and privacy issues when using the web so as to ensure the safety of transactions.  The more people are safe and feel secure using the internet, the more likely they are to keep using those sites.  Any business who doesn’t take security seriously would likely suffer commercially in the online space.

Moving to a Cheaper Locale

winemaking equipment in chileOne of the main reasons someone decides to move internationally, outside of politics, is money.  After all, it’s expensive to live in America and a lot of other places around the world are well, at least less expensive.

That came to mind the other day because I was talking to a winemaker friend who was saying that she might move to South America to start her own winery.  Evidently land in Chile is still pretty cheap using US Dollars and you can find a variety of wine outlets already in the region.  Plus, she should be able to ship her wine up here relatively easily because of the free trade agreement and the lower costs will allow her to sell her wine to cheap wine clubs instead of focusing exclusively on direct to consumer sales which are notoriously difficult.

Overall it seems like a good plan for an aspiring winemaker don’t you think?

Health Education and Literacy

It’s important for people to check their blood pressure regularly because this is a major step towards leading a healthy lifestyle. Learning more about the heart and conditions which affect it is very essential because this forms the basis of combating heart conditions such as hypertension and hypotension. A blood pressure chart for children has values which tell one if he/she has low pressure, high pressure or normal pressure of blood.

People are usually advised to go for regular checkups because conditions of blood pressure usually go unnoticed and that may lead to complications if early diagnosis is not made. Pressure of blood usually decreases as blood circulates within the arteries, veins and capillaries. The heart pumps blood through relaxation and contraction. Systolic pressure is the pressure when the heart is beating while diastolic pressure is when the heart is relaxed.

The blood pressure chart enables persons to learn about the details of their blood pressure values. These values help people to know if their blood pressure lies within the normal range or if it’s very dangerous. One is also able to know if he/she is vulnerable and therefore take action before it’s too late.

A systolic value of 120 and a diastolic value of 80 shows that the pressure is normal and therefore one should maintain the healthy lifestyle he/she is already leading. Systolic values between 140-159 and diastolic values between 90 and 99 are indicators of pre-hypertension and people whose values fall in this category are advised to exercise regularly and avoid too much salt.

Hypertension can be caused by too much salt, fatty food, heavy drinking and smoking too. People with this condition are advised to avoid taking such staff and concentrate on healthy foods and healthy lifestyles. Values above 160 and 100 fall at stage 2 hypertension and people in this category should regularly visit their physicians and take proper medication so as to combat this condition.

Afghan Literacy Programme

Many Afghanistan women have not had even a basic education due to the wars and religious oppression in the country.  But the government have just launched a new literacy programme using a mobile phone.

The phone is called a ’mobile teacher’ (Ustad Mobile) and supplies language courses in both Daru and Pashto the two national languages of Afghanistan.  There is also a basic mathematics course supplied on them as well.  All of them are audio and video, and include lessons in writing, pronounciation which are presinstalled on the smart phones.  They are distributed free of charge to students taking the course.

Of course the Taliban are largely to blame for the low levels of literacy in the country.  All girls were banned from education when they where in power.  When the Taliban controlled Kabul the effect was huge with thousands of women denied even a very basic education.

The software was developed by an Afghanistan software company and financed by mainly US aid.  It’s hoped that the initiative will improve the literacy rate amongst women which stands at an appalling 12.5% according to the United Nations official statistics.  This is compared with nearly 40% of Afghan men who can read and write.

Afghanistan is desperate to bring it’s population’s education standards up to help it operate effectively in a modern world.  There are also some great initiatives to improve the countries internet infrastructure.  Unfortunately accessing online education resources is not quite as straight forward yet in the country as many are restricted based on location.  Internet users often need to use proxies and VPNs to access blocked sites – for instance using a UK proxy server to access the BBC Iplayer abroad

Financial Education Enhances Literacy

There’s no doubt that teaching our youth about financial essentials paves the way toward enhancing broad literact rates.  Use http://myamortizationcalculator.net/amortization-calculator/ to promote the comprehension of financial principles.

Majority of individuals in the working class of the country do not have enough savings to purchase a property or other large-sum necessities such as vehicles outright. Hence, they often resort to mortgage loans to start using the property even though it is on the process of being paid. To determine the amount to be paid or amortized each period, a mortgage amortization calculator automates the entire process. An important feature of this calculator is the automatic generation of an amortization schedule that provides a list of the required payments every period. A special characteristic of this schedule is that the periodic amortization often paid monthly comprises a portion for the interest and for the principal. This characteristic is advantageous to the loan applicant since it will imply that the principal is reduced over time, hence, the interest based on it.

The mortgage amortization calculator works perfectly in this particular financial scenario since the length of the mortgage is determined at the outset of contract signing. The agreement obliges the homeowner to pay a certain amount every period, which is typically monthly by practice, and needs to be determined beforehand. To construct the schedule using the calculator, input values required are the capital borrowed, the term of the loan in years, the fix rate, and the number of payment cycles in a year which usually per month. In the amortization formula, the resulting value is the monthly repayments to be made. First, the monthly interest is determined by dividing the interest rate by 12. Next, 1 is added to this monthly interest and then raised to the power of the number of months for 30 years, which is 360, in its negative form. The resulting value is then subtracted from 1. The result from the previous calculation is then inserted into the denominator of the fraction with the original interest as the numerator and finally multiplied by the principal.

For instance, if the principal amount is $100,000 mortgaged for a 30-year period at 7% interest with payments to be made monthly, then the monthly payments required is $665.30. This amount to be paid monthly is fixed; nonetheless, the portion of the amount allocated for paying the interest and for paying off the principal varies. To determine this proportion, the simple interest formula is used. In the first month, the amount allocated for paying the interest is $583.33. This value is calculated by dividing the interest by 12 and then multiplying the result to the principal amount and the number of months that elapsed after the start of the contract. After taking out this value of $583.33 from the fixed monthly payment, what remains is the amount paid off for the portion of the principal.

A particular interesting trend to note in the schedule as generated by the mortgage amortization calculator is the gradual decrease of the amount allocated for the interest and the gradual increase of the amount allocated for paying off the principal. Remaining balance as well displays a decreasing trend as more months elapse.

Gap Between Rich And Poor

Asia has the biggest human population on the planet with 4,227,067,000 people estimated to be living in the continent with with the gap between the rich and the poor growing futher and further apart with 1.4billion people living in total poverty.

With the rich investing very little back into the country they are from instead they are spending the money that are making on luxury items like sports cars, big houses and holiday lodges england

With all the money that is being spent outside of the continent there is a lack of money that is being invested into the education for the young and poor. This is increasingly putting presure on the goverment to think of other ways to generate cash to create schools and other educational facilities.

This is seeing more and more outside help coming into the smaller countries in asia to help with the development and to help in the education of children with young adults from europe coming over to teach english and other subjects on their gap year before going on to university.

With the ever increasing gap in the rich and educated and poor and illiterate grows the strain on the country to grow is under pressure. Without an educated work force the abilty to grow and develop is highly restricted.

Problems lying ahead …

One thing that I believe is clear and that simply no one can argue about – whether you are left or right – are the rising costs of many basic and everyday things that we need in our lives.

From fitness prices all the way down to our most basic needs like sleep and food, the majority of them have been experiencing quite a big surge in price in the last few years and what worries me the most is that I simply do not see a simple solution to that problem.

When you take into account the huge deficit that the US now faces plus all the problems that Europe is going through at the moment, one can only wonder what will happen next.

It seems to me that we are at the moment basically living by with no real purpose or knowledge of what will happen in the future.

Sure now it is easy to go by while we are on the brink of total destruction, but I believe that if something half as bad as what we have experienced in 2008 happens again, well, then me might be in for a wild ride that I simply do not know how long will last.

Improving Basic Literacy Is A Must

It seems with recent studies that were carried out that literacy levels not just in developing countries but also in the likes of America and China are showing signs of falling. There could be any number of reasons for this with some saying the digital age has made both adults and children lazy in terms of reading. Many children in studies taken had not read a book and instead spent their time playing computer games and visiting social network sites.

One thing for sure is the need to get literacy levels back upto an accepted standard. The benefits are massive both personally and economically, literacy allows people to make informed decisions on data made available through print. Health is one area that can be addressed, the causes of sexually transmitted and smoking related diseases and the benefits of using discount codes for E-Lites to purchase electronic cigarettes.

Literacy helps give confidence to people who would otherwise think they had limited choices for their future, the sooner measures are brought in to provide this basic education to everyone the better.

Learning management systems

The popularity of free learning management techniques is continuing to grow lately for you to this extent that you could now choose the system you want best. However, the software industry can be powered generally through income as well as the ability to offer customers cutting-edge technology. Even if that will technology is not really user-friendly. Learning management systems (LMSs) as well as training course creation equipment is certainly not forgiven from this sensation. While many learning management systems are incredibly well-developed and simple to use, fragile along with unnecessarily challenging courseware is constantly stop popular and effective learning.

The learning management system is really a difficult tool, but it doesn’t have to end up being complicated to use due to the fact via web design template not fret it makes the particular system more inviting. To make use of these kinds of systems you simply register from their own website, select a design template, you could make your pages, decide on your current functionality and you really are increasing and running. A growing number of LMS providers tend to be focusing on the accessibility in their web design templates. And should in addition let training course designers to create and brand their own content, which makes it customized for their very own reasons and cozy for employ inside of the person group.

Moreover, since the system simply connects to the website, no require the substantial programming code that this various other two systems accomplish. Without having obtaining as well technological, this supplies the greatest good thing about almost all that’s that your site will do far better about the search engines like Google due to more lean and better code it can be developed with. Designing and delivering learning content over a learning management system need not be an intricate or perhaps daunting activity.

Automatic Litter Box That Cats Love To Use

Are you bringing a new cat into your home? However, if someone is not around to change the cat litter often enough, or if the cat relieves itself often, an automatic cat litter box can be a help since it rakes the litter, cleaning it right after the cat has relived itself

The question is: are automatic litter boxes making traditional litter boxes obsolete, and is that a good thing or not? If you are tired of raking, scooping and bagging cat litter, investing in it can be worth every penny. They generally need electricity to run so you should place it close to a power outlet. More and more cat owners are purchasing automatic cat litter box for multiple cats since they are easier to keep clean and more pleasant to have in the house.

Whether you choose to go automatic or traditional when it comes to litter boxes all depends on what you and your cat need. You may have to experiment with several different models before you find a box which your cat likes. I, personally, find an self clean litter box works best in a multiple cat household.

The Opportunity for the Raspberry Pi

It might sound crazy but many are hoping that ICT teaching in the United Kingdom will be transformed by the Raspberry Pi.   For years now computers taught in schools has been a dreary combination of word processing, spreadsheets and hopeless basic applications that both students and teachers find very dull.  However there is a bigger problem in that the skills here are not equiping kids to choose careers in most computer based work environments.  What they need is a to be exposed to real computer science which incorporates programming, networks, security and all the skills beghind these areas.

There is a real, growing computer literacy problem in the UK, as computers become easier to use – you need less and less knowledge to operate them as a user.  However we are simply not supplying the appropriate skills to develop the UK as a technology skill centre.  Now a new computer has been developed which will be introduced to schools called the Raspberry Pi. It is a small computer which will cost about £20 which you’ll be able to plug into a mouse and keyboard and have a fully operational Linux based computer ready to program.

The real beauty of this computer though apart from it’s price is that it opens a simple door to learning to program.  Just like the generations who grew up with the BBC Micro and ZX Spectrum – the Raspberry Pi will do nothing until you start to program it.  It’s the gateway to coding and hopefully will give children a real insight to proper what proper computer science is all about.   James Niell from the technology and security blog - http://www.onlineanonymity.org/ hopes the same -

“The computers we were brought up with forced us to learn about programming languages, how the computer worked and the very basics of computer science.  To use a modern computer you simply don’t need these skills and our kids are being disadvantaged as a result.  I’d love to see a large proportion of the IT curriculum being taught and developed around the Raspberry Pi – the results could be incredible.”

The Rasperry Pi should be available for purchase very soon from their website - www.raspberrypi.org.  I for one can’t wait for the huge injection of nostalgia I expect from a computer that needs to be programmed.

Wine Documentation

Documenting wine is starting to get more and more attention by the news media. In essence they are interested in the text which belongs on a wine bottle.

Most of the talk goes back to a simple point: food is suppose to have an ingredient label.  Wine does not currently have one.

It would be overly simplistic to think that all wine is exactly the same.  Grapes left out to ferment.  The truth is that every bottle you give as a wine gift has undergone some form of human intervention.  Usually that’s adding synthetic yeasts so the winemaker has a better idea about the path that fermentation is likely to take, but some wineries add sulfur or other chemical ingredients.

Should a winery only producing a few hundreds of bottles of wine need to go through the complex label registration fresh every year with new ingredients? Personally, I don’t really know!

Forex trading and financial illiteracy

Financial literacy can be defined as the process by which an individual understands how to make correct decisions regarding finance. When an individual is incapable of doing the later, he or she can be described as suffering from financial illiteracy. Forex trading on the other hand is the process by which currencies are traded from different nations against each other.  Forex is simply a word coined to replace foreign exchange when it comes to currency. People trade forex to take charge of their financial future, and people are joining every day because of the startup costs. While starting a business that could be a lot complex in terms of the future, it has been observed that trading in the forex can provide almost anyone with an opportunity to secure his or her future in terms of finances. However, how about it you aren’t up to the task?

How about if there was something interfering with your success? Incidentally, financial illiteracy is one of the challenges affecting people trading in the forex, or rather engaged in forex trading. Note that people who know how the forex trading works, or rather financially literate people, they already know that when the market goes down, there will be profits although limited as well as when the same markets go up, there will be mammoth size profits. Trading doesn’t take breaks, and thus is carried on 24hrs a day, seven days a week and hence 365 days a year! What really separates the rich trading in the forex from us? The noble as they were called centuries ago are no longer in existence, forex trading takes strategy depending on the objectives of the trader. Whether you are a startup or an already excelling person in the same practice, financial illiteracy is the greatest problem affecting people.

Basically, before you decide to take part in forex trading, you need to draw a line between you and the market. This is because a promising trader in the forex is the one who understands the market clearly. Note that this trader should not be confused by software or any other trading strategy; he should be able to use any trading platform easily without panic or inconveniences. Since financial illiteracy is perhaps one of the leading challenges, and thus there isn’t any kind of indicator that could provide credible information on the same, the illiterate in forex trading are seemingly becoming the leading losers on the same.

Postit Notes For Literacy

For those struggling to learn to read English, the use of post-it notes or index cards can be a great learning aid.

I found the use of cards indexing words to pictures very helpful for basic vocabulary words.  For my adult students I have sets of cards for simple words like ’beer’, ’money’, ’car’ that associates them with pictures of the aforementioned items.

I encourage my students to take these home and read through them several times.  I know some of them post them up on corkboard tiles in their home and make a point to review them every day while preparing their evening meal.

While not everyone has cork board tiles at home, students can still get the same benefits simply by studying them the index cards by hand.

Overall, my students who use both these notes and the study guides learn to read and speak English faster than those who rely on the state assigned study guide alone.  Of course it is hard to say if this is because the index cards are particularlty helpful, it may be just because they are willing to work harder.

Importance of Renewables

The media pays a lot of lip service to the importance of developing an energy policy that uses renewable and alternative energy. Of course, the mainstream media doesn’t invest in solar panels or do anyhing to offest its carbon emissions. The mainstream media likes to take the occasional swipe at consummer culture and mention the possibility of resource depletion. But these swipes at modern culture are just to appear even handed.

What is more telling is how the media loves stories about local residents complaining about wind turbines and wind farms. How terrible to live next to a wind farm! Nobody asks these hand picked ’local people’ whether they would like to live next to a nuclear power plant or even a coal burning power plant. We must dismiss aesthetic objections and look for the lesser of evils as regards human health. We must also look beyond this generation to the next. Do we want to leave a world with no fossil fuels for our grandchildren to inherit?

The issue is not just with energy. Materials are also very important. Metal ores, hardwood and plastics derived from petroluem are all limited. Recylcing is one way to make these resources last longer but the time must come when we adopt alternatives for every day items. Instead of hardoowd floors we must have bamboo floors. Renewable resources such as cork, rattan, bamboo and coconut must replace hardwood. Plastics must be derived from vegetation not oil. Metals must be used sparingly if there is no alternative. For a start the car industry must be reigned in. Inbuilt obsolesence must be outlawed and the patents to make electric vehicles must be taken from the Cheron who has conveniently ’buried’ them.

The future must be renewable or there simply is no future.

Fighting illiteracy in Thailand

It is always good to read a positive story about the developing world. The media is far to apt to pick up only on crime, drought, war, disease and unemployment in its coverage of Africa, South America and much of Asia. Bad news is news; good news somehow doesn’t qualify as being news. Instead the people of the UK are brainwashed with football, the Americans with American football, baseball and basketball and so on. Your team winning apparently is news worthy, but not a success story in the developing world.

One such unheralded good story is Thailand. The lietacy rates from the north to the south, from the Andaman Coast to the Gulf of Thailand. Among the islands of Koh Phangan, Koh Chang, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi and so on is very, very high. In 2004 UNESCO reported that the literacy rate for Thailand was 95%. This is incredible considering how long the country is and how many people live in very rural areas.

Thai is a difficult language to read. The written form of Thai uses an old script with many pecularities of notation. Moreover, there are few public libraries outsode of the major cities. There have been few famous writers or poets in the Thai language. Thai drama is not widely performed in the country.

The success in literacy comes down to the universal schooling offered from 6 years to 12 years. After this period parents must pay to continue their children’s education. The fact that most children get some schooling in Thailand has made the literacy rates very high. Another factor must partly be monastries that take in a lot of novice monks and give them an education.

It is thus no wonder that Thailand has become a popular location for Japanese car plants. It also attracts other foreign factories keen to utilize the large pool of literate and intelligent workers available in Thailand. The future looks bright for Thailand.

Basic Literacy Skills Neglected

At the moment in the UK all the teenagers are waiting for their GCSE results.  Every year we are greeted with record passes, rising results and apparently much higher standards.  But although many more are passing the exams, the system seems to be failing the employers.

Many employers and higher education establishments are complaining about the poor standards of basic literacy and numeracy.  In fact many employers are stating they are having to invest time and money in training in these very basic skills.  These findings have been also confirmed by several independant reviews of the GCSE system.  The results may be getting better but clearly our childrens education is not improving.

These children with record passes have been through 11 years of education and employers are complaining about their poor literacy and numeracy – something that they previously took for granted.  Business groups such as the CBI have urged for a reassesment of the entire GCSE system.  Michael Gove the educational secretary has stated that he doesn’t believe the current system is not working.

One advantage that current kids have is the internet and there is a whole host of educational information online.  Obviously it requires some motivation to learn and improve these skills, but there’s no doubt that the information is out there.  Take for instance the wonderful BBC web site which has loads of educational material available for free.  There’s a whole section on basic skills and the Bitesize site can help both children and adults improve their basic skills.

For people outside the UK you may have trouble accessing some of the resources.  Most of the Bitesize site is accessible Worldwide but the BBC Iplayer has some restrictions blocking access through Geotargeting.  You can bypass this block though fairly easily – check out this post here - http://www.theninjaproxy.org/ninja/how-to-watch-bbc-iplayer-on-your-ipad-from-outside-the-uk/ , this explains how to get access from an IPad to the BBC Iplayer but there are links on the page for other compouters too.  It basically involves using a proxy server to hide your real IP address.

Romney Needs a Gift-Seriously Some Wine Would Help

Politics are getting sketch aren’t they?  From Mitt Romney selecting Paul Ryan to bolster his stance with the Republican base, this just seems like it is going to be a dirty, dirty election doesn’t it.  Hell, I feel like i should send one of my fine wine gifts to Romney since I think he just cost himself the Presidency by selecting someone who is going to scare off every old person in the critical states of Florida and Ohio (among others like Arizona and Nevada which I bet Obama now takes in a cake walk).  Oh well, if he didn’t see that outcome coming then he shouldn’t have been President anyway-hey here’s an idea, we are in the middle of two wars and a diplomatic stare down with Iran and China at the same time, pick someone with some foreign policy experience since you don’t have any!

Chinese Dissidents and Cheap Wine

I opened a bottle of wine last night from one of the cheap wine clubs that I belong to (yes, more than 1….call me a lush if you must) and sat down to watch the news.

At the beginning of the telecast I was surprised to see that the blind Chinese dissident had refused asylem in the United States and decided to stay in China with the promise he would be allowed to live and work at a University in the mountaineous Eastern portion of the country.

I thought he was crazy.  If they change their mind, NO ONE is going to be able to help you.

Only an hour later common sense had prevailed.  He wanted to fly home with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  Talk about coming in with some style, of course he wanted to bring his family with him.

Personally, I say not only good decision, but really smart to stop trusting a fascist government which has already thrown you in jail multiple times for stating your opninon on how they treat working class citizens.

Thailand, Debt and Disaster

Thailand is one of the success stories in recent years in terms of economic growth. The country is blessed with deposits of oil, with rubber and with two rice crops a year. It is one of the few countries that are net exporters of food. The climate and soil makes it perfect for growing a wide range of food products. As food prices globally continue to rise, Thailand becomes stronger economically. Its currency has since its devaluation in 1997 remained stable and has gained in strength against the British Pound and the Euro.

Another factor in Thailand’s economic success has been tourism. The beaches of Khao Lak, Koh Samui, the parties in Koh Phangan, the forsets around Chiang Mai, and the draw of Bangkok have seen visitor numbers increase year after year to the country. On top of this, Japanese companies, especially those connected to the car industry, have moved a lot of their factories to Thailand because of the cheap labor and the infuriating way the Chinese refuse to protect patented technology.

While inflation remains low in Thailand, so does the minimum wage in Thailand. It now stands (depending on region) between 159 Thai Baht and 221 Thai Baht an hour. That is between $5.3 and $7.3. The majority of the population are rural poor surviving on agriculture. The weatlh in the country is very unevenly distributed. This is why a popularist like Thaksin has had such a huge impact on politics in the country.

The wealth of Thailand, as with so many other emerging economies, is not used to benefit the masses. After the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004 small businesses were given minimal to zero assistance to re-build. Instead many outside developers moved in and set up big hotels. Now after the 2011 floods in Thailand the World Bank estimates the cost to be 235 billion Baht to re-build. The central government quickly put the money into repairing the damage to Bangkok but many rural areas in the country have not received public funds to get life back to normal. It seems unlikely that they ever will. The World Bank has said that national prioroities ’may need adjusting’.

However, the World Bank set a debt ceiling at 60% of GDP. It is a foolish government that goes close to this ceiling considering the crisis currently being experienced in Greece.

The answers are not simple, but a more equitable and fair distribution of funds after disasters in Thailand needs to be affected. Why not have a tourist tax to raise the money. Afterall, tourists already pay 3 times as much for the same goods as Thai people. Why doesn’t more of this revenue go towards the most needy in Thai society?

Education VS Politics

In most debates the topic of education comes up. It is no secret there needs to be education reform in most countries around the world. It might be surprising but there are many people in your neighborhood that might not read as well as your seven year old.

I know this first had as I worked for an insurance company for six years. At first it surprised me how horrible traffic accident claims looked. Then I started to notice how many people could not phrase a simple sentence.  For years this happen, it did not matter who the local government or the president was.

If we really want to succeed, if we want our children to succeed, we must take the politics out of education. We need teachers who love their job and find ways to reach the kids who need that extra help. Only when we demand more out of our politicians will there be a place for education improvement.

Fighting Financial Illiteracy

Unfortunately too many people, both young and old just do not understand money and things relating to money to a good enough degree. Survey after survey will back this up. A lot of people are simply financially illiterate. And ignorance is not bliss, it’s downright dangerous.

Now, more than ever, people need to have the skills that will help them to make intelligent decisions when it comes to choosing the right mortgage or insurance product, or even more simple things such as working out what the best deals in the supermarket are. The subprime housing crisis is a good example of what financial illiteracy can lead to. Many people lost their homes and if they are ever to find themselves back on the housing ladder they will probably have to go for less attractive bad credit mortgages and miss out on some of the great deals that record low interest rates have brought with them.
